to a dear friend:
If
I wasn't having enough sorrow, my beloved little three legged Katmy lost
her life last night. She was 15 and I told myself I don't go all weepy
when the old ones die but she was my house dog for her entire life. I
walked so many miles in the fields with her. I watched her compete with
the big boys while they bounced her into the tumble weeds and she came
up fleeing faster than ever and often passing and beating them to the
prize. She was so light that she was never hurt and often bolted right
over a huge pile of tumble weeds that would leave the bigger ones and
even the Salukis (she was often smaller than a lot of the Salukis) dead
in their tracks sniffing the bush while she sailed on over and joined
the rabbit on the other side back into a mad dash way ahead of the others.
She was ever so game and held no grudges. Well, there was seldom a dog
that could catch the Wiley thing to make any grudge good!
On the Lure long after others would have given up for age
and boredom, she was still cranking after it and when pushed off her line
she would just take to the outside and go around - seldom putting herself
out of contention by cutting across...she loved the competition of chase
too much to do that. She earned the best opposite sex in open field her
first year out and best of breed her second year out. She earned a JC,
both her ASFA FCh and AKC FC, in addition to earning a Lure Courser of
Merit lll. She was often in the top ten nation wide in ASFA.
Most of all she was just so fair and absolutely good natured.
She never even looked at another dog, even in straight racing. She was
afraid of the Baby boy and thus didn't do well while he ran. I would have
come back and tried her after the Baby quit coming out and bullying.
We had some great adventures and she showed me some scary
independent moves when she didn't feel like coming right back, but that
took the boredom out of our relationship
After she had her beautiful litter of puppies she became
entangled in the tarp we put up over the doghouse to keep them all cool
in the hot California sun. She was right below my bedroom window, upside
down with her rear leg twisted tightly up to the hock all night and never
cried out. She knew I would save her . The next morning I did just that
but too late to save the leg. She lost it from the hock down. Game as
ever, it never slowed her down - she even grew a pad on the bottom of
her stump. She still went out free coursing with the rest of the gang
in the local fields after rabbits. She was right up there with the rest
except on a few turns. Nothing dimmed her enthusasium or love of being
out running and showing everyone how fast she was. Several of my friends
stated they couldn't bear seeing her like that but the only one it bothered
was them!!
She didn't even know anyone thought her different. The other
dogs never even checked out her stump. Would that life in general could
be more like that for everyone!
She will become a box of ashes on my shelf along with
a select few other GREATS which will give me the illusion that she hasn't
left me after all. One way with dealing with grief.
