La Mascara of Rancho Gabriel
CC CM, Pacific Coursing Champion was known as Carie. She was sired by
Cacciatore
of Rancho Gabriel out of CH
Markina of Rancho Gabriel. She was our first female Borzoi!
When we got Kamehameha
of Rancho Gabriel (our first Borzoi) his personality was not what
we expected for a Borzoi (a dog of Courage). He drooled constantly in
and around cars, even ones parked by the sidewalk sent him into drooling
fear. We lost track of the number of times he threw up in the car. He
was even afraid of the exhaust fan over the stove. He did not like dog
shows or obedience or much of any other activity. Even our whippet pushed
him around.
At the age of 7 months we decided to return him to the Gillettes claiming
that he just didn't seem like a Borzoi in personality. Phydelma's response
was a request that we reconsider and come down a visit without "Mayor"
and discuss the matter.
When we arrived she brought out this girl. She said," What you need
is another Borzoi." Spoken as the true used car salesman of the Borzoi
world I thought to myself. Never the less we took " Carie "
home on trial. "Mayor " was waiting in the living room. The
moment we entered the house, his eyes lit up with glee and his body language
said "FOR ME?"
You know what? There was no more drooling or fear of the car in it or
on the side walk. Life became "GREAT" for Mayor from then on!
Phydelma was indeed a wise woman and a good used Borzoi saleswoman...
Carie earned the title of
Pacific Coursing Champion - one of the few Borzoi to do so. This was during
the beginning of organized Open Field Coursing in the Western US. Carie
also ran in the very first Lure Coursing trial ever held by ASFA where
she tied for 2nd/3rd. This was a big accomplishment since in those days
the trials were held as mixed stakes - all breeds running together! She
was bred to "Mayor" to produce the first litter here at Pickle
Hill: Carie's Go-By of Pickle Hill
and Mayor's Run-Up of Pickle Hill.
